IN JULY 2019 !!

Flag Retirement Ceremony

Flag Day

 Friday, July 14, 2019 at 6:00 p.m.

at the

Somers Center Cemetery

81 Battle Street, Somers, CT.

The Legion will be assisted by the Somers Scouts. The public is invited to attend and can bring unserviceable United States flags that they wish to have properly retired. The formal ritual normally takes about 30 minutes.

The sovereignty of The United States of America is symbolized by our flag; therefore, it deserves the respect of all citizens to properly maintain and display it in a proper manner. In due course flags, however, become worn and damaged beyond repair.

The Flag Code, as revised and adopted by the Congress of the United States, affirms that when a flag is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it is to be disposed of in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

Since 1937, The American Legion has promoted the use of a public flag ceremony to provide a suitable method for retirement. For more information, contact The American Legion in Somers, at (888) 240-8188 (toll-free), or send an email to us at: Info@SomersPost101.org.

If you have a worn, frayed, faded, torn flag that needs to be retired, you can bring it to the ceremony to be retired. The post also has flag retirement drop boxes at the Fire Department, 400 Main Street, Somers Town Hall, 600 Main Street, Somers Library, 1 Vision Blvd., Geissler's, 95 South Rd., and the Hall Memorial Library, located at 93 Main Street in Ellington.
